From the ‘Gipfelhaus Dobratsch’ Summit Lodge to the Rosstratte car park
A brief taste of heights: hiking high above the Gailtal valley, opposite the Julian Alps, to the final destination of the Dobratsch Summit Trail
Having enjoyed a hearty breakfast with stunning views at the Dobratsch summit lodge, you start your descent along the access road. After around 100 metres, you take the ‘Jägersteig’ footpath to your right – a narrow, rocky and partly root-covered trail which does, however, offer the most outstanding views. To begin with, the path runs directly above the rugged, steep southface of the Dobratsch – before turning left to take you on a steeper incline (elevation gain: 100m) towards the ‘Zehnernock’ mountain. (Please note: At the starting point of this incline, take care NOT to continue straight ahead along the unmarked path, as this leads into a strictly protected zone, and receives no trail maintenance.)
As you pass the shelter on Zehnernock mountain, simply keep walking east until you reach the gravel track that runs from the Dobratsch Summit Lodge to the Rosstratte car park. Now it’s just a short walk along the track to the large car park next to the ‘Rosstrattenstüberl’, a cottage-style tavern – where your shuttle will be waiting for you. The shuttle service takes you along the Villach Alpine Road to Warmbad-Villach, dropping you off either at your car or accommodation. Having accomplished your semi-circular tour of the Dobratsch complete with summit trek, you still have all afternoon to explore the city of Villach, or unwind in Warmbad-Villach’s ‘Kärnten Therme’ thermal spa.
Please note: Although this last stage of the Dobratsch Summit Trail is comparatively short, it poses greater technical challenges than the previous stages, and requires hikers to be free of vertigo. If in doubt, we recommend you simply stay on the gravel road (which runs all the way from the Dobratsch Summit Lodge to the Rosstratte car park) for the entirety of today’s ascent.
