It is a whim of nature that the two largest and neighboring islands of the Adriatic Sea, Krk and Cres, are exactly the same size despite their very different shape. While Cres stretches far out of Kvarner Bay to the south like an elongated finger, Krk presents itself as a rather compact oval, which is perfectly suitable for a circular trail. On top of that, Krk already has a dense network of hiking trails, which can be selected and ideally connected to a long-distance hiking trail.
This idea was taken up by the Bookyourtrail.com team, who created the "Krk Island Trail", which offers long-distance hikers the Mediterranean magic and the whole diversity of Krk in seven daily stages around the island.
This diversity already enchanted the ancient Romans, who worshiped the island by calling it "Insula aurea", the "Golden Island". A predicate, that still applies today, especially if you discover the island by hiking our "Krk Island Trail". Its route guidance fascinates with lonely beaches, shady oak forests, skillfully constructed labyrinths of old dry-stone walls and karst mountains resembling lunar landscapes, which again and again provide beautiful views of the azure Adriatic Sea. Often you will not meet a soul for hours on your trail, which is why it will be strange and pleasant at the same time to immerse yourself in the vibrant and lively streets of picturesque, partially historic coastal towns such as Baška or Vrbnik after a long day full of impressions of the croatian wilderness. There you can truly enjoy a rest in one of the many cafes or konobas.
The Krk Island Trail will inspire you with these contrasts and the thought-out Bookyourtrail.com Trail Service like convenient luggage transport and selected hiker-friendly accommodations. Its ascent is technically easy to moderate but requires a certain amount of stamina. Especially the scenic stage from Vrbnik to Baska is challenging - here, however, it is possible to shorten the trail by using our Shuttle Service.
Tips: No trail is as suitable for kicking off the new hiking season as the Krk Island Trail in April! In October, the hike can be perfectly combined with a swim in the still pleasantly warm Adriatic Sea!
The best seasons for trekking on the Krk Island Trail are spring and autumn.
Spring Awakening (March, April, May): While March can still be uncomfortable at times, April and May are wonderful months for hiking on Krk. April is generally a very pleasant month for activities on Krk. In May the weather is perhaps a bit more stable, but there can be quite hot temperatures (take enough water on the treeless stages 5 and 6!).
Summer (June, July, August, first half of September): Due to hot temperatures not suitable for long hikes like the Krk Island Trail.
Autumn (second half of September, October): From the beginning/mid-September onwards, temperatures are usually mild enough to make hiking a pleasure - but temperatures in September can still reach around 30°C - but in this case it is ideal for jumping into the refreshing sea along the Krk Island Trail. (remember: plenty of water is the key to success, especially on the shadeless stages 5 and 6). At this time of year, the weather is often stable, and the clear air creates beautiful lighting moods. Die erste Novemberhälfte bietet sich oft noch gut an, dem Nebel daheim zu entfliehen.
Winter (December, January, February): In November and December the weather often gets much wetter and cooler - most hotels and restaurants are closing. For these reasons we cannot recommend the time between end of November and the beginning of March - even though the trail is accessible most of the year. The first half of November is still a good time to escape the fog at home.
From a technical point of view, the Krk Island Trail has minor to moderate difficulties, which are no problem for experienced mountain hikers. However, some longer passages on karstic or stony ground require sure-footedness - the trail is not a stroll, but comparable to an alpine trail in the Alps.
You will also need some experience in finding your way despite our route description and GPS tracks: most of the trail sections are marked - but on some of the pathless passages the markings are a little further apart - and on some sections not every intersection is perfectly marked. We will give you a detailed route description - if you follow it closely you will find the way without problems.
The Krk Island Trail is more demanding in terms of fitness, as stages with a walking time of up to seven hours (stage 5 without shuttle just under 8 hours) and 900 metres of ascent with stage lengths of between 15 and 24 km can be mastered - stage 5, which is also the longest stage, also has no possibility of breaking off. The entire trail is about 124 km long.
We usually provide the hiking times according to Outdooractive's calculation. However, our exploration of the Krk Island Trail resulted in slightly longer walking times than usual, as sometimes you can't move as fast because of the karstic terrain and the look for the next marker. These experiences have caused us to indicate 5-10% longer walking times than usual.
The trail is suitable for children from the age of 14 who are fit and enthusiastic about hiking.
Due to their requirements, long-distance hiking trails and trekking routes are little or not suitable for people with reduced mobility. In order to clarify individual cases (degree of reduced mobility), it is recommended to contact the Trail Info & Booking Center before booking.
More information about the classification of the trails and the technical and physical preparation of the hike can be found here..
For the Krk Island Trail a "normal" hiking equipment is completely sufficient. Nevertheless, there are some special characteristics: Due to the sometimes hot temperatures and the lack of trees as shade on the long stages 5 and 6, it is absolutely necessary to take along enough water (depending on personal needs 2 to 3 liters) and a hat! Also, due to the sometimes stony surface, it is important to wear sturdy shoes with a grip profile sole to avoid having to feel every stone.

The carrying along and wearing of a mask covering mouth and nose (FFP2 mask) is mandatory in many areas of the hotels as well as in public life.
Tip: With our luggage service you can keep your daypack light, while the heavy luggage (up to 20 kg) is taken to the next booked accommodation. We recommend that you also take out a luggage insurance.
