Lonely stage through the eastern Karawanken between Slovenia and Austria in the face of the mystical rugged Steiner Alps
ATTENTION: This stage is currently not accessible due to storm damage. Maintainance work is in progress.
From Gasthof Rogar, the trail leads through the forest along the green-white-red circular markings steadily uphill towards Potocnik Cave (Potocka Zijalka). The Uschowa is marked in Slovenian with Olseva or Obel kamen. During the ascent you will be accompanied by the backdrop of the church Sveti duh and the broad view of the Logar valley.
After about an hour you will reach the cave, which served as a dwelling for Cro-Magnon people during the ice age. Skeleton discoveries of cave bears, weapons and tools made of stone and fireplaces prove the settlement about 30.000 years ago. From the cave it takes about half an hour of steep ascent, which is rewarded with a fabulous panoramic view of the Uschowa - the Carinthian peak.
The second peak (Govca 1.930 m) on the Slovenian side is easily accessible via a narrow path. The back area is ideal for a first snack and refreshment. From here you can see the Saualm area and the wide Jauntal valley very well. The path leads exposed in south-eastern direction over an unsecured rock step. The path leads to a fork in the path where you turn left at the rock and go downhill quickly over scree fields and mountain pines.
At the end of the scree field you enter a forest section and after about 15 minutes walking time you come to a forest road which you follow to the right. After about ten minutes you turn left and cross an exposed alpine pasture (Govseva Planina). A small brook gives you refreshment here before you enter the forest area again. The path leads you relatively evenly through a section with ancient coniferous trees and partly one meter high ant hills. You come across a forest path, which you now follow and never leave again. At the beginning of the forest path you will come across a hunting and alpine hut with a spring, where you can refresh yourself again. From here you walk for about one and a half hours to Gasthof Kumer.
From Gasthof Kumer the forest road continues to the old border crossing. Then you reach the extensive Luschaalm on the Carinthian side. In the last section of the trail you pass the Friedenskirche (Church of Peace) and reach Gasthof Riepl via an asphalt road. The walk from Kumer to Riepl takes about 45 minutes.
