Inspiration

Overview

Hiking towards your inner self. Off the beaten track. Discover the hidden and open up to encounters. With the courage to slow down through the undiscovered heart of Carinthia. Between the Turracher Höhe and the small, picturesque Maltschacher See. That' s consciously wandering on the new Trail of Horizons! Our calming answer to the restlessness, hectic and exuberant pressure to perform and a fast-moving world.

The success of the Alpe-Adria-Trail has established Carinthia's reputation as a true long-distance hiking paradise. In recent years, other fascinating trails have been added to it, such as the Panoramaweg Südalpen, the Karnische Höhenweg and the Nockberge-Trail. The latter opens up the archaic, calming mountain massif of the Nockberge in the biosphere park of the same name on a wonderful high-altitude route and is enjoying increasing popularity. Whereas a few kilometers to the east, in the immediate neighborhood, Carinthia's undiscovered heart continues to slumber in a deep sleep.

After all, outside Carinthia nobody has ever heard of the Hochrindl, Deutsch-Griffen, Gnesau, Tiebel or Flatschacher See - Yet this heartland of Carinthia reveals a place of longing, which forms a deliberate contrast to the hustle and bustle and anonymity of today's illusory tourist worlds. With its unspoilt and decelerated villages, the fairytale forests, the many gushing springs and brooks and the small, picturesque lakes.

Thus, with the new trail of the horizons of Carinthia, we want to gently kiss the undiscovered heart awake. On moderate and carefully selected trails that invite you to discover and meet. Inspired by special points of contact, which always open up new horizons and are arranged like a string of pearls along the trail.

The Trail of Horizons is meant to affect long-distance hikers - beginners and experienced hikers alike. With its moderate but varied trail. And with its gentle invitation to engage in the experience of a consciously wandering. To discover hidden things, myths and even small sensations on new paths. To seek peace, relaxation and active recreation and to find yourself step by step.

Information

Best time to travel

The best time of year for hiking along the Trail of Horizons is from mid-May to the end of October, depending on the snow conditions and the opening times of the accommodations.

Suitable:

  • Summer (June, July, August): Summer is an excellent choice for a trip along the Trail of Horizons: The trail is snow-free throughout and you can easily escape the summer heat by relatively high altitudes up to 1.800 m or by passing extensive shadowy forests along the trail. And should it ever be really hot or thundery: The stages are at max. 5 hours long, so that you can usually escape the afternoon heat if you start early in the morning.
  • Autumn (September, October): Crystal-clear air, discoloring forests and cool temperatures. Hiking in autumn (September and October) is beautiful on the Trail of Horizons. Later in autumn, the onset of winter makes it difficult or even impossible to hike.
Partly suitable:
  • Spring (March, April, May): In the months of March and April the trails are partly still under snow and therefore the trail is not yet passable. From the middle of May on, all passages of the Trail of Horizons are usually snow-free, well passable and very beautiful in the emerging vegetation. In case of doubt, however, please contact the Booking Center or the regional tourist offices.
Not suitable:
  • Winter (November, December, January, February): The stages of the Trail of Horizons are not accessible from December at the latest, as most of the trail, especially stages 1 to 4, is under snow.

Requirements

On the Trail of Horizons you travel as an individual hiker (without the guidance of a mountain guide) on marked mountain paths, partly in high alpine mountain regions with altitudes of up to 1.800 m. For the Trail of Horizons you need alpine hiking experience, which includes not only the correct self-assessment of the technical and physical requirements for the points listed below, but also experience in orientation in the terrain (including reading topographical maps) and in how to react in case of bad weather. You will be well looked after and supported by our organization. Nevertheless you are on your way as an independent hiker (unless you optionally book a mountain guide). We would like to point out that despite our tour organization you are on your personal responsibility on the Trail of Horizons.

Technical requirements: Moderate
From a technical point of view, the Nockberge-Trail shows moderate difficulties: The stages follow moderately difficult mountain trails with red dot (classification Austrian Alpine Club).

That means:

  • Difficult parts of the path are mostly narrow and often steep.
  • There may be short passages secured by ropes.
  • Due to weather conditions or short-term extreme weather events, hiking trails may be in a poorer condition (e.g. slippery) or less visible due to fog.
In order to be able to manage this as a mountain hiker without problems you need to be:
  • surefooted
  • free from giddiness
Conditional requirements: Moderate
The Trail of Horizons is a moderate challenge for a mountain hiker:
  • Ascent performance depending on the stage up to 800 meters in altitude
  • Descents depending on the stage up to 1.150 meters in altitude
  • Path length up to 16,5 km depending on the stage
At no stage all three maximum values come together, which means pure walking times between 3 and 5 hours.
  • The calculation of walking times is based on the Outdooractive formula (Outdooractive is one of the world's largest providers of tour documents and market leader in the German-speaking world). This includes swift walking times, which correspond approximately to the average speed of a well-trained mountain hiker.
  • Wichtig: Angaben sind reine Gehzeiten, d.h. Pausen müssen noch dazugerechnet werden
Appropriate conditional preparation is strongly recommended. Our tip: Since you are on a multi-day tour, you should have already hiked similarly demanding hikes as a day tour. You can also plan a day off in between, where you can relax.

Further Information:
  • The Trail of Horizons is suitable for children from 12 years of age with very good physical condition.
  • Long-distance hiking and trekking routes are little or not suitable for people with disabilities due to their requirements. In order to clarify individual cases (degree of reduced mobility), it is recommended to contact the Trail Info & Booking Center before booking.
It is often difficult to personally assess whether a trail is suitable for you. If you are unsure about this or if you want to know which stages are best for you, just contact us. We will gladly advise you. However, this does not release you from the responsibility of your own self-assessment.

Equipment

For the Trail of Horizons you need alpine hiking equipment.

  • The equipment list, which you can find under this Link lists the minimum equipment needed for this trip.
  • Of course you can or should add the items that you personally need for the trip or with which you have had good experience (e.g. medication, special sun protection, larger water bottle etc.).
Further preliminary information about the equipment:
  • Trekking poles are recommended because of the sometimes longer descents.
  • You usually hike at altitudes between 500m and 1.800m - this should be taken into account when choosing your hiking equipment (especially your clothing) - even in summer it can be quite cool at the highest altitudes and hot in the lowlands.
  • Make sure you have enough provisions and sufficiently large drinking bottles, although on all stages except stages 1 and 4 there are rest stops and frequently water sources.
Tip: With our Luggage Service you can easily hold your daypack while your heavy luggage (up to 20 kg) is taken to the next booked accommodation. We recommend that you take out a luggage protection insurance - please contact us regarding this.
