Inspiration

Overview

We often get asked the question whether there is a fewer demanding alternative to the famous Everest Base Camp Trail. In case you do not have more than 14 days available for the journey or the respect for altitudes above 5.000m is just too big for your first Nepal Trek - exactly for this kind of situation we created the Everest Easy Trail, situated at the Khumbu Himal in the Everest area.

This enchanting trail has several advantages for Nepal-beginners: Firstly, you only need two weeks of vacation (including eight days of trekking) for this great Himalayan experience. Secondly, your hike will not surpass 4.000m in altitude - combined with our careful travel planning, the inconvenience of high altitudes and the risk of altitude sickness are largely reduced. Thirdly, the attractiveness of the trek does not suffer a bit from this reduction in distance and altitude! On the contrary, the varied circular trail in the heart of the Khumbu Himal opens up magnificent views and insights! Legendary paths on which even the first-time climbers of Mt. Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa hiked, the vibrant Sherpa town Namche Bazar, magnificent Buddhist monasteries in Tengpoche and Pangpoche and fabulous views of the highest (Mt Everest, Lhotse) and most beautiful (Ama Dablam) peaks on earth. As crowning conclusion, a panoramic path off the beaten track awaits you, leading from Pangpoche to the pristine Sherpa village Phortse, home to many legendary Everest conquerors.

Information

Best time to travel

Spring and autumn are the most suitable times for a trekking journey on the Everest Easy Trail, with each season offering its unique advantages.

Spring (March, April, May): Trekking on the Everest Easy Trail is possible from March onwards, though there may still be snow on the last few stages leading up to the Base Camp. In April, the temperatures begin to grow more moderate, with blooming rhododendrons covering the landscape in glowing hues of red. The afternoons can bring rain showers, which become increasingly frequent and intense throughout May. The end of May marks the start of the monsoon, and the end of the trekking season.

Summer (June, July, August): Although the monsoon season is less intense in the Everest region than other parts of Nepal, a trekking journey in the summer months is not recommended. The mountain scenery is often concealed behind clouds, while flights to Lukla are frequently cancelled due to bad weather.

Autumn (September, October, November): From mid-September onwards, the monsoon season draws to a close, and fine weather can persist in the Everest region for weeks on end – meaning clear blue skies and the most incredible long-distance visibility. The days are still fairly warm, but the air cools down rapidly once the sun has gone down. Especially in November, the nights can turn decidedly chilly at higher altitudes. For those who enjoy sharing the experience with like-minded people, this is the perfect time, as autumn is the busiest season on the Everest Easy Trail. The stages leading to / starting from Phortse, however, are still very quiet.

Winter (December, January, February): From December onwards, the temperatures in the Everest region drop rather dramatically; even in places as low as Lukla, you might get the occasional dusting of snow. Seeing as the Everest Easy Trail does not cross any high passes, it is suitable for a trekking journey even in winter: an interesting proposition for those with a high resistance to cold and a deep love for solitude.

Requirements

In terms of technique, the Everest Easy Trail is moderately challenging, making it suitable for any surefooted hiker with previous experience in mountainous terrain. The paths are broad and well-worn, without any exposed stretches.

With regards to endurance, the Everest Easy Trail is slightly more demanding, considering that each day-trek involves up to seven hours of hiking and up to 900 metres of elevation gain. However, with adequate preparation and strict adherence to the pre-determined acclimatisation days, this should pose no problem to any experienced trekker. The altitudes are also moderate (highest overnight stay: 3950m) – making the Everest Easy Trail a perfect introductory route for Nepal-novices. It is vital to follow the stipulated programme of trekking and acclimatisation days, along with the instructions of your Sherpa guide.

The Everest Easy Trail is suitable for teens aged 14 and up, provided they have very good stamina.

We also recommend that you request a health check and start your relevant vaccinations six months before your date of travel.

Here you can find more information about the requirements.

Equipment

Standard alpine trekking equipment will be sufficient for your trek on the Everest Easy Trail. Click here for more equipment details.
