Sites of longing are places of contrast. They are the dreamed-up counterpart to a specific, sometimes seen as imperfect environment. And this contrast always create an emotional or atmospheric dimension. People from seasonally pale, chilly regions crave the light of the south. Because this light does not even leave a shadow on the soul.
But only when this gentle, magical, somehow unreal and in any case difficult to describe light of the south unites with the multifaceted turquoise blue of a large alpine lake like Lake Wörthersee it unfolds its full magic. The changing colours of Lake Wörthersee make up a monument of nature by itself: from the whitish to turquoise-blue turbidity of summer to the silver shimmer - like a mirror - on calm autumn days to the mystical darkness in winter.
Lake Wörthersee is therefore indeed a place of longing. And the Wörthersee Rundwanderweg provides a new, intensive and conscious approach to this place of longing on its four daily stages. In the enchantingly quiet time of spring and autumn as well as in summer. A time when the region around the lake is transformed into a "lifestyle stage". The trail offers enough free space away from the hustle and bustle, while in the evening you can immerse yourself in the vibrant life of the beach promenades and its cafes.
The Wörthersee Circular Hiking Trail is ideal for all those who are looking for a less difficult but nevertheless exciting stage hiking trail in a picturesque landscape. The hiking season starts in spring and ends in autumn. Or in summer, seeking the contrast between hiking and the enjoyment of lakeside lifestyle. For example with our comfort package "See.Ess.Spiele" (see "Offers").
The best time to explore the Wörthersee Rundwanderweg is from the beginning of May to the end of October, with each month having its own attractions.
Spring (April, May, first half of June): Even if it is already in April possible to hike on the Wörthersee Rundwanderweg, the conditions become really good from the beginning of May: a blossoming nature and very pleasant temperatures offer perfect conditions for a wonderful hiking experience. Often, the water temperature of Lake Wörthersee is already warm enough to jump into the turquoise blue lake.
Summer (second half of June, July, August, first half of September): If you want to combine the Wörthersee Rundwanderweg with swimming in Lake Wörthersee or in the surrounding lakes such as the Forstsee at stage 4, summer is the right time for you. The temperatures can be quite hot for hiking, sometimes above 30°C, but the stages are not too long and large parts of the trail are pleasantly shady. With an early start, you can take advantage of the cooler morning hours and have time for an afternoon at the beach.
Autumn (second half of September, October, November): From mid-September to the end of October, crystal-clear air is often combined with discolouring forests to create fantastic scenery. Stable highs with pleasant temperatures are quite common and create a perfect hiking experience. It can be already too chilly to swim in Lake Wörthersee. In October the temperatures in the morning and in the evening can become quite cool (temperatures in the single-digit range). November is hardly suitable, as the fog often remains persistent at Lake Wörthersee, resulting in damp and cold weather.
Winter (December, January, February, March): Although the Wörthersee Rundwanderweg is an easy hiking trail in the middle of hilly landscapes, there is often snow in winter and the trail is not accessible.
From a technical point of view, the Wörthersee Rundwanderweg has only minor difficulties for a hiking tour, which are no problem for a mountain hiker. However, partly rugged forest paths require a certain amount of surefootedness. The Wörthersee Rundwanderweg is well marked in the terrain. However, a moderate ability to orientate is recommended.
The Wörthersee Rundwanderweg is a moderate hiking trail for experienced hikers with good physical condition: there are stages of up to 5h walking time (500m in ascent or descent and up to 18km in stage length) to overcome. The trail is between 440 and 680m above sea level and the terrain is hilly with a handful of steep ascents and descents.
The trail is suitable for children from 10 years of age who are fit and enthusiastic about hiking.
Due to their requirements, long-distance hiking trails are not suitable for persons with disabilities. In order to clarify individual cases (degree of reduced mobility), it is recommended to contact the Trail Info & Booking Center before booking.
It is possible to take your dog with you on the Wörthersee Rundwanderweg. At this point, however, we would like to draw your attention to the obligation to use a leash.
More information about the classification of the mountain trails and the technical and physical preparation of the tour can be found here.
For the Wörthersee Rundwanderweg a standard equipment for low mountain hikes on unpaved paths is completely sufficient. A detailed equipment list for your hiking trail can be found here .
Tip: With our luggage service you can easily carry your daypack while the heavy luggage (up to 25 kg) is taken to the next reserved accommodation. We recommend that you arrange a luggage insurance policy.
